basic reed-making kit:

- Ten (10) slips of pre-gouged cane, with one slip finished
(sides parallel, inside finish-sanded) for comparison,
as well as one side of a finished reed head for comparison.
- Five (5) staples--either five tubing staples or three
tubing staples and two rolled staples -- and twelve
(12) copper bridle blanks. With recycling this should
keep you going for a while. All staples designed for
Gallagher chanter. Contact me
if you need a different size.
- Mandrel w/wooden handle for holding the reed in the
tying up process, and squooshing the staple to make
a tubing staple. This is not the tapered rolling mandrel.
- 6 inch dial caliper
- Three sanding cylinders: 2.375", 2.5 and 2.75".
- Unwaxed floss and beeswax/thermowax mixture in leather
holder.
- Needle-nosed pliers w/ clipper (to trim bridle)
- Stanley Utility Knife
- Plus ebony cutting block, sandpaper, teflon tape,
and a hard copy of my reed-making guide with update.
If you don't need:
- pliers, subtract $5
- utility knife, subtract $5
- calipers, subtract $12
Not Included in the Basic Kit, but necessary
for reedmaking:
- Benchvise. Jaw opening of 2 1/2 is best, but
an opening less than that of the sanding tube can be
used by wrapping sandpaper around a block of wood and
the tube and clamping the wood. Available at most hardware
stores, or you can order one by mail from Woodworkers

#891-567, a portable vise with 2 1/2" jaw opening that
sells for $20.
